How Can I Know I
Am Saved?
Hebrews 5:9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
Wouldn’t you like to know you are saved? How can you know you are saved? Is there a certain thing one must do to be saved? How can I keep it once I have it?
All of these are great questions. You know, the first thing to do if you are unsure about something is to ask questions. There is nothing wrong with asking questions. Questions may eventually bring answers.
So do you want to know how you can know you are saved? Well, let me ask you these questions, and have you consider each one:
These are important questions.
We like to believe we are all saved, and we just need some assurance of that fact. But what we really need to know is whether we are saved or not?
Christ did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance:
Luke 5:32 I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
So if Christ came to call you, you must start life as a sinner. You must be a sinner when he finds you and you come to him. You will not need a savior until you admit you are a sinner. We all start life as sinners. “Repentance,” as defined in a good dictionary, means “a turning, with sorrow, from a past sinful course of action.” So the purpose of Christ’s coming, his death on the cross, and his resurrection from the dead, was to call sinners to repentance.
So back to our questions.
If you haven’t been saved before now, if you haven’t turned to Christ before now, if you haven’t obeyed His call before now, then you are not saved now.
If you remember a time when you knew you were a sinner, and you knowingly meant business with God and turned to Christ as your savior, who freely granted you repentance of your sins and a determination to please God, then Christ has saved you. If not, you are still lost.
This is the
most important determination you will make in your lifetime, because your
eternity depends upon it.
If a time of salvation has not occurred in your lifetime
up until now, then you are not saved.
So, question number 3:
If I am saved now, when did I
change from not saved to saved?
You did that
when you came to Christ:
Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
When you
placed your faith and trust in him to save your soul from hell:
Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
And when He
made you a new creature, with new desires, new wants, new priorities, and new
attitudes:
II
Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man
[be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all
things are become new.
Galatians
6:15 For in Christ Jesus neither
circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.
When your
heart was changed:
Romans 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
If you can look back at your life and find the time you became a new creature, you can know you are saved. If not, you still need salvation, and only Christ can provide it. Question answered.
